With the economy what it is today, more and more people are looking for ways to save money wherever they can. First, make sure you have good home insurance. If there are any natural disasters, or even unforseen major problems that happen to your home, you should be prepared. This investment will save you money in the long run, especially if something bad happens.
Another way to save money is through Do It Yourself (DIY) home improvement. When things start falling apart, it can often be expensive to hire a handyman to come and fix it. But such things are necessary and need to be fixed. What you may not know, is that you can often do such repairs yourself at just a fraction of the cost. You just have to know how. If you want to start trying your hand at more DIY around the house, here are a few tips to help make things easier for you.
Removing mold
Add 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of warm water and use it to scrub the moldy area. Rinse and repaint with some mildew-resistant paint, which helps to prevent further problems.
Repairing cracks in the driveway
You don’t have to put up with those cracks in your driveway anymore! If you leave them, they will only get bigger, so fill them up now. The best thing to do is to purchase a crack filler from the store and fill them up yourself. Make sure that you clean them out with a hose first, and leave time for the filler to dry after.
Unclog the drain
There are a lot of expensive products on the market for unclogging drains. But did you know that you can actually do it yourself using a home-made combination of baking soda and white vinegar? Saving you money and the time it takes to drive to the store!
Squeaky door
If you are tired of hearing that door squeak every time you open it, it is incredibly easy to do something about it. You can either apply some oil or, if you don’t have any, petroleum jelly works just as well; and it’s cheaper and easier to find!
Cleaning the shower door track
You can clean it easily by pouring some vinegar into the track and scrubbing it with an old toothbrush. After you are done, clean it out with warm water.
If your toilet isn’t flushing properly…
Often a weak toilet just needs a good clean. If your toilet is not flushing well, try scrubbing under the rim with a toilet brush to get rid of the build up. For the bits that are hard to remove, try using a toothbrush for easier access.
If your toilet is leaking
A leak in your toilet can be unpleasant as well as inconvenient. So use some food coloring, and put it in the tank. Leave it for a while and you will be able to see where exactly the leak is located. Most leaks can be easily fixed, once you know where they are.
Dim lighting
If a particular light bulb seems to be dimming, dust it before you replace it. A layer of dust can dull the light of a bulb by up to fifty percent, so it is worth cleaning it every once in awhile!
Replacing a broken bulb
If a light bulb breaks in the socket, it can be hard to remove it without cutting your hands. If you use something such as a potato or an old tennis ball and place it over the broken glass, you can avoid getting your hand cut by the broken glass. Then all you have to do is twist!
Squeaky floorboards
If your floor has some annoying squeaky areas, try sprinkling talcum powder over it and then sweeping it into the cracks.
